Looking Beyond the Blueprint: How a Mezzanine Became Possible (Time-Lapse Video)

When it comes to custom construction, some of the most rewarding solutions come from looking at a space differently—sometimes literally from a new angle.

A recent project at Sports Lab is a great example.

Originally, the owners didn’t think a mezzanine was possible in the building. On paper, the structure appeared too limited. With an eave height of just 16 feet, fitting a mezzanine didn’t seem realistic when viewed two-dimensionally.

But buildings don’t exist in two dimensions, and that’s where experience and creative problem-solving make all the difference.

Thinking in 3D Changed the Outcome

While the eave height was constrained, the roof told a different story. The building features a 4” rise per 12” run roof slope, which creates usable rafter space above. By evaluating the structure three-dimensionally, our team identified a way to incorporate a mezzanine that met functional needs without sacrificing the spaces below.

The result is a mezzanine designed for viewing and storage, thoughtfully integrated into the Sports Lab layout.

Below the mezzanine, both the kitchen and bar areas maintain 8-foot ceilings, ensuring comfort, usability, and proper flow.

Elevated Construction, Executed Precisely

One of the most interesting parts of this build was placing concrete at mezzanine height. This time-lapse video captures concrete being pumped up using a line pump, a process that requires careful planning and coordination.

We partnered with Envy Concrete, whose team executed the pour efficiently and with precision.

The Finished Result at Sports Lab

What initially seemed like a structural limitation became a standout feature of the space. The completed mezzanine adds functionality, visual interest, and long-term value to Sports Lab, proving that thoughtful design and experienced construction can unlock possibilities that aren’t obvious on paper.

Most importantly, the owners are thrilled with the outcome.

If you’re exploring what’s possible within your own facility, this project is a reminder that sometimes the answer comes from looking beyond the blueprint.
